What it covers

This course will introduce you to the historical and contemporary systems, values, policies, beliefs and practices that uphold the settler-colonial project. You will explore what it means to reside on unceded Indigenous Land and build your capability to identify, examine, and enact personal and professional responsibilities arising as a result. In this course, your learning will centre diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences, knowledges, views, and perspectives to develop your ability to recognise, examine, and critique settler-colonialism in Australian society and discipline-specific professional practice. You will practice critical self-reflection and relational approaches to develop cultural responsiveness, humility, and explore your own cultural position in relation to Indigenous sovereignty. To guide this knowledge and skill development, each week you will learn from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples including scholars and experts in key content areas, highlighting Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing (Martin, 2003), truth-telling, contemporary cultural expression, life experiences, values and aspirations. Together, this knowledge and skills will develop your capability to promote self-determination and partner with diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, groups, and communities. Classes are designed to promote safety for all students and will develop a forum for the discussion of ideas, truths, challenges, and identify opportunities to transform practice. Note: The course may include on Country learning with traditional knowledge holders which may involve an additional fee for students.
